Of course, no one is at the pool when we get there and it’s dark. The only lights are coming from the pool itself. It’s one of those long rectangular pools with the black lines indicating lanes on the bottom of the floor if you want to do laps. When I was younger, I had a strong imagination and was terrified of those lines, imagining that they were Orca whales right below my feet, ready to swim up and swallow me whole.

I’m still kind of scared of them.

We drop our towels on one of the pool chairs and Duncan pulls his shirt over his head. I try my best not to stare at his flat stomach. I shrug out of my shorts to reveal my bikini bottoms and then pull off my Southern Rebirth shirt.

“I like that shirt on you,” Duncan says with a bashful smile.

“But it would look better on your bedroom floor?” I tease, knowing that’s a line guys like Tony would use.

Duncan’s eyes go wide. “Geez, no. I just meant you look good in that shirt. I’m glad you have one and you’re showing support for the band.”

“I was kidding with you,” I say, placing my hand lightly on his chest and then quickly removing it. “Sorry, I’m just used to guys being…pervs.”

“Bad experience?” Duncan asks as he walks to the stairs that lead into the pool.

“Very bad,” I whisper, since our voices are echoing off the walls, and follow him into the shallow end. “Did I ever tell you why my parents sent me down here for the summer?”

Duncan sinks into the water and when I join him, I’m surprised by the warmth. Most pools are freezing. Duncan shakes his head at my question.

It’s now or never. Time to open the past so I can move on. Honesty is what makes things work with people right?

I take a deep breath in, Duncan’s eyes are trained on me, ready to hear the story. “I’ve always tested my parents’ patience. It’s the only way I can get their attention. I had a boyfriend back home, Tony, he was wanted by most of the girls at my school. Total jock, and to my surprise, he wanted me. I never knew why. Maybe because we grew up together and I was his best friend. One night we were hanging out in his car in the parking lot of my school.

“He tried to take it a little too far—luckily we were caught by a nun. My parents were furious. I was banned from all school activities and grounded, followed by a summer of working down here. Tony got a slap on the wrist, that’s all.”

“That doesn’t seem fair,” Duncan says.

I shake my head. “It doesn’t, but you know what? This summer has been the best ever. Tonight was worth the punishment. I’m better here than back home where I would just be wasting away.”

“I’m glad to hear that, and happy birthday again.”
